Vavle Tick? Or is it something else?
Its been at least two years that I have been at this problem. My engine ( the KA24e) has a growing tick as you push the gas pedal. Its a low tick while its in neutral. Though I have talk to some people about this and they have stated that its a valve tick, some say that it may be knocking. Though I have read a guide that the Lifters not working properly.
(Technical Articles: KA24E Ticking Lifters Repair) I am somewhat scared to do this because I want to know what I have to do and how far I have to go into the engine. and not judge everything on pictures. And I want to know the list of tools that I may need. Otherwise, I am going to save up for another engine and swap it out. Currently, my mileage is around 91k for a 1990? too good to be true?

Otherwise, I still say that it runs strong for its condition."The ultimate skill is to take up a position where you are formless.... Those who are able to adapt and change in accord with the enemy and achieve victor are called divine...."-Sun Tzu

try useing thicker oil to quiet down the tick ....
i know some one who bought a 1995 gst with a blown rod bearings (crank walk) and didn't know till he changed the oil to find out it was runing gear oil or 20w-50 motor oil.. wonce he changed the oil to 10w -30 he found ou that the motor has a bad knock ...i mean bad knock... thicker oil quiet's down and valve ticking that why you use thicker oil on older and high mileage car's...

to fix the sticky lifter problem thats a pain in the azz... you need to take off the timing chain and it's a chain like a bike chain.. brake a key off one of the chain...if you do that you might as well change the water pump and chain tensioner and chain with sprockets..you can buy the whole kit for $200 on ebay.....the taking off and fixing the car it not the hard part it's putting it back together you need the timing marks dead on if not by by motor and you piston will hit the valve and dig the piston and bend some valves and you need a new motor and all the money to fix that ticking valve gone due to timing off 1 tooth on the timing chain sprocket...good luck with that

Honestly if your having doubts just have a shop do it! Using thicker oil is just a bandaid you should fix the problem. Adjusting the vales is really not that hard and can be done in about an hour you shouldnt have to remove anything but the valve cover.
Ive done it on my nissan it's an older model engine but your ka isnt too much different than my z24. Took me an hour first time was ALOT easier than doing it on an LT1.

nissan 240zx ka24 is not lile a ls1 or any datsun's .... datsun motor's are like tractors... inline 4 and 6 are easy as hell! but morden nissan are hell to work on! they have the cam rolling and pushing on the valve down and have Hydraulic Lifter the is a little spring and ball that spring get's stuck or the little ball fix that and you fix your problem... i agree with dustin take it to a shop! take it to rj's on benmadox across from sonic my budy luke works there and rj's ealy know nissan's better then the dealer..

From a good "hunch" I am hoping that it is the lifters. I am going to ask a third shop to take a look at it before any other decision is taken. Just to narrow down the problem. But I do have a chilton's book which sometimes doesn't even carry diagrams for my model but more of the Stanza and 200sx models.

Other possibility
Hey if ur problem is like anything like mine, and all its doin is a valve tick? and u can adjust ur timing? then u should try running higher octane and adjust ur timming..... dats all i had to do. i was runnin 91 and my timming was to far advanced cuz it was set to run vp gas. but i retarded my timing and eliminated da knocking.

omar you are my friend but.....
Ignition timing and/or camshaft timing has nothing to do with it.
Another option you should try is right before you change your oil(like an hour before) put "Sea Foam" in your engine oil and run it through. its a solvent that can free stuck lifters and do wonders for your engine. If its a hydraulic lifter its probably plugged with sludge and shit.
Note:the lifter will get alittle louder when you put the Sea Foam in, but only for a little bit, its just the solvent working it out that or make sure that the lifters are in adjustmentLast edited by ZzZDeathRunnerZzZ; 01-07-2010 at 12:03 AM.
