ford problem
hey guys im having trouble with my engine again. first note, i got another new starter. so thats installed and has ran fine yada yada yada. yesterday was the first day, and it would have a really hard time starting. id have to crank it three or four time and pump the gas the entire time in order for it to fire up. then when i go, the engine will be warm, and ill be idling at a stop light, and when i take off my truck will die. when i put the starter in i tweaked the timing just a hair because my starter has broken twice and the manufacturer said it was the timing why it keeps breaking. so i tweaked it, dropped about 2-250 rpms. ran a lot better until yesterday. so i need some help. has anyone ever heard of this?

Timing broke the starter??? Never heard that before. My dad's Ranger broke two starters but it was the Flywheel. Not the timing. What RPM's are you at idle? and what is youre timing set from TDC?

sounds like fuel pump is kicking the bucket, but not sure. like sal asked....whats your timing set at?

your timing should probably (depending on the cam) should be about 8-10 base and 28-34 total. at least that is how my stock cam 5.0 runs best. but the timing should have nothing to do with the starter since the starter is not engagede all the time. and i certainly would not make it die. the starting and the fact that it died at the stop light does sound like a fuel issue to me too. what kind of pump do you have? if its the original i would recommend swapping it anyway.

to be honest guys i have no clue what fuel pump i have. i know its electronic and really noisy. from looking at the teeth on my old starter that kicked out and broke, the teeth were shiny all the way back, so it seems that the starter is going too far deep into the flywheel. i tried putting a washer on the bottom and it didnt engage at all. i idle around 750 rpms. i dont know about the timing, i just turned it a little i didnt use a light or anything.

first set your timing with a light man.
12 to 14 degrees intiail 34 or so total.
make sure u unhook the dist vac line while setting the timing.
then put a fuel pressure guage on it and if its carbed should be 5 to 7 psi,efi should be 38 to 42.

how will i know the degrees?
wheres the vac line at? is the fuel pressure gauge a tool or an actual gauge?
when i punch it, it stutters, then goes. and when im just cruising it occasionally stutters. The Old Danger Ranger

it idles around 850 or so. my cousin said that when i punch it it sounds like it might be misfiring. idk how to tell or not tho.
