St. Johns river is fun to 4x4 in, especially when it has water in it! Sunk my truck in it once, but that was back in 1974 when I was young and stupid

Best places I that I know are near Fresno, I'm from Shaver Lake area originally and know all the good spots. Bald Mountain, Jose Basin, Blue Canyon have some amazing trails. Mirror lake trail i'll think of more later but those are some all relatively close to each other. I had a 86 4 Runner that did all those trails pretty good with just stock transfer case and 5.29 gearing. No Marlin Crawler or nothin.
